Closed alpha · The First 25

Own your photo editor.
Pay for AI only when you use it.

DepthField Photo is a native Mac editor — real layers, real masks, AI woven in — launching later this year at $69 once. Before that, I'm hand-picking 25 people who make images for their work to push it hard and shape what ships. The First 25 keep it free for life.

The ask: one 30-minute Zoom + two short feedback notes · No NDA · No payment

See it work

Not a filters-and-frames toy — a real editor. Here's what that looks like.

Liftoff

Lift the subject out. Keep a clean plate.

One gesture pops the subject onto its own layer — and fills in the spot it left behind. Two steps, one beat.

BEFORE AFTER

Replace with AI

Select it. Say what belongs there.

Rough-select a region, type the swap, and pick from three takes — color-matched and contact-shadowed into place.

Depth effects · on-device

Five ways to use the third dimension.

Bokeh, relight, fog, tilt-shift, sunrays — each reading the real depth of the scene, on your Mac, updating live as you drag. Tap an icon to jump in.

Original

Styles

One photo. Dozens of looks. One click each.

Golden-hour, film, mono, and many more — each applied across the whole frame in a click, your subject untouched.

BEFORE AFTER

Replace sky

Swap the sky. Keep the scene.

Trade a flat, blown-out sky for golden hour, blue hour, or a dramatic storm — and the foreground re-lights to match.

The deal

Alpha testers get

  • A free lifetime license to DepthField Photo v1 — and a free upgrade to v2 when it ships.
  • Your name in the credits. The First 25 ship in the About box of every copy of v1. (Opt out if you'd rather not.)
  • A direct line to the developer. Bugs, gripes, feature requests, half-formed ideas — all read by the person who wrote the code.
  • A real hand in shaping a tool you'll actually use.

In exchange, I ask for

  • A short live screen-share session (~30 minutes, over Zoom). I'll send you a link to book a time that suits you — then we hop on, you share your screen, and we walk through how you'd actually use DepthField Photo for the work you do every week. Nothing to install or record on your end.
  • Honest written feedback at the end of week 1 and week 2. Bullet points are fine; longer notes welcome.

That's it. No money changes hands during alpha. No NDA. Nothing locked behind a contract. If you decide DepthField Photo isn't for you, walk away — the free license stays.

Tools, not taxes.

Somewhere along the way, your tools became landlords. The editor you used to own became a monthly bill. The AI inside it gets cheaper to run every month — but you'd never know it from the price of a "credit." I think you should own what you buy, see what things actually cost, and pay for exactly what you use.

DepthField Photo exists to prove that's still possible.

What is DepthField Photo?

Here's what that looks like in practice.

  • Real layers, masks, blend modes. A complete image editor underneath the AI — not just filters and frames.
  • AI where you ask for it. Replace anything with a prompt. Extract subjects in one click. Reframe a landscape into a square or vertical without losing the subject. Apply a studio-portrait or golden-hour look in seconds.
  • Your files, your folders. Opens .png, .jpeg, .tiff, .gif, .webp, .avif, .heic/.heif, .svg, and more.
The DepthField Photo editor in action

At launch, DepthField Photo will be $69 once — no subscription, and you always see what AI costs before you use it. As an alpha tester, you skip the price entirely.

Who I'm looking for

This alpha is for people who edit images as a real part of their work or craft, not occasionally:

A good fit

  • Startup founders, solo entrepreneurs & small-business owners building a brand and doing their own visual marketing
  • Etsy / print-on-demand sellers — product photos, listing mockups, store branding
  • Vintage, collectibles & secondhand resellers (eBay and similar) — crisp product shots that move inventory
  • Airbnb hosts & real-estate agents — listing photos that sell the space
  • Bloggers, writers, podcasters, and other content creators producing recurring visual content

Probably not a fit

  • You only edit images a few times a year — the feedback signal won't be strong enough for either of us.
  • You're already a Photoshop power user with a workflow built around the full Adobe ecosystem — you're not the audience I'm tuning for.
  • You're a developer or technical reviewer — I have separate feedback channels; reach out directly.
  • You're after AI video generation or editing — DepthField Photo is photos only for now. Video's a space I may explore down the line, so stay tuned.

How to apply

Fill out the short form below. I'm picking 25 people for the closed alpha; I'll review applications as they come in and respond within a few days either way. No essay, no portfolio, no need to be a power user of anything.

Jens Roland, founder of DepthField Photo Jens Roland, founder of DepthField Photo

Hi, I'm Jens. I've been building software for thirty years, and DepthField Photo is the editor I kept waiting for someone else to make — one you own, that runs on your Mac, where AI is a tool instead of a tax. There are no investors, no growth team, no exit strategy. I'm hand-picking 25 people because at this stage every single opinion has to count — and when we get on a call, you'll be talking to the person who wrote the code.

I use your name and email only to contact you about the alpha. No ads, no data selling, no sharing. Privacy.

FAQ

What does "alpha" mean here?

The product mostly works and I've done plenty of testing, but I haven't put it in front of real users at scale yet — so expect rough edges: some flows aren't polished and bugs are still in there. I'll fix what you report, fast. Features may also shift, get renamed, or get redesigned based on what I learn from this group — that's the whole point. It's macOS-only at this stage; Windows is on the roadmap (but not part of the alpha yet), and Linux may come later if there's demand.

How long is the alpha?

About 2–3 weeks of active use. Your free lifetime license stays free forever regardless of how much you use it during alpha.

What kind of feedback are you looking for?

Anything honest. What confused you. What you tried to do and couldn't. What surprised you. What you'd tell a friend about. Quick reactions in week 1, more considered thoughts in week 2.

What happens in the session?

We hop on a short Zoom call (~30 minutes), you share your screen, and we walk through a few quick tasks together and then how you'd use DepthField Photo for your own work. I'll ask what you're trying to do and what you expected as we go — that real-time back-and-forth is the whole point. Casual, not a test, and there's nothing for you to install or record.

Is the session recorded? Will it be public?

I record on my side, just so I can review it afterward — there's nothing for you to record or upload. I won't post any clip publicly without your explicit written permission.

What happens after the alpha?

The product moves into a paid founders' beta (around $29), then a public launch later in 2026 at $69. Your free lifetime license carries through every stage — alpha, beta, and beyond.

What's the catch?

There isn't one. The alpha gives me the feedback I need to ship a tool people will pay for at launch. Alpha testers get the tool free, forever, in exchange for a few hours of their time and honest input.

Will I be on the hook for AI costs during alpha?

No. Cloud AI is on me during the alpha — your copy comes with $20 of cloud AI included (good for 150+ AI edits), no setup beyond signing in. Prefer to bring your own fal.ai key? That works too, at zero markup. And about 70% of the app runs entirely on your Mac with no cloud calls at all — either way, you'll see the price of every AI action before you click it.

My friend wants in too — can they?

If they fit the audience above, send them this page. I'm keeping the group small (25 people) so I can actually read every piece of feedback, but a strong fit is always welcome to apply.

What if I miss the alpha?

A larger founders' beta opens after this stage — paid early access at a steep discount on the $69 list price, with the same direct line to the developer. I'll email you when it opens.

What about privacy?

No ads, no data selling. The application form asks for your name and email so I can contact you about the alpha; I won't share it or use it for anything else. The same policy applies to the app itself.
